Stop cutting my kid in half, Dublin City Schools.
People of White Youth United: does that sound okay to your ears, DCS?
I am of German descent. My husband is of Asian descent. Accordingly, we tell our children that they are both German and Asian. In crude terms: they are white and yellow. Not “off white,” not “light yellow.”
We do not, however, discuss this topic often because we also tell our children that they are not defined by arbitrary distinctions like skin color and that fragmenting people by race is wrong.
So when a student group appears in our district schools, introducing segregation by race** and indicating that “people of color” need a “support system” because they are in a “mainly white” school - it raises some issues for us.
Specifically, it goes against everything we have taught our children about race and their own personal identity.
It teaches my kids that races exist in separate and meaningful groups - hopelessly drifting past one another,
it asks my kids to put themselves in a box - explicitly rejecting and erasing part of themselves, and
it encourages my kids to think of themselves as victims - people in need of a special “support system” - solely because of the color of their skin.
I would not call this cultural advancement. I would call this cultural regression.
And one of the inevitable results of our school district promoting progressive dogmas regarding race and gender.
Discuss.
* “Person of color” is defined as a person who is “non-white.”
** I realize the flyer says “White people are also welcome.” But I am not sure how sincere or welcoming that invitation is considering the group is called POC youth united (explicitly leaving out white people) and the stated objective of the group is to “support” POC who have to deal with a majority white population at school.
Hello! I am one of the co-creators of POCYU and I am mixed! The group started because we wanted to discuss cultures and experiences. Our club creates projects aiming to help people learn and feel included. Many of our club members are white and they are welcome just as much as POC. The reason why mixed people are regarded as POC is the same reason as why Barack Obama is considered the first black president despite being half white. If you wish to further this conversation I would be happy to. I can also provide some of our clubs projects if you want.
You must feel really good about yourself publicly posting posting names of middle schoolers on your blog to prove some “agenda”.
